Coming from the big city of Curitiba, we were looking forward to the beaches of Florianópolis.

The praises about this city were in such abundance that it was hard not to think that reality would be disappointing, impossible to live up to it’s expectations. How wrong we were.
After crossing the bridge from the mainland we arrived with the interstate bus in the city-center, shortly after we took the bus to Lagoa da Conceição, a part of Florianópolis on the other side of the island.

We immediately noticed that this city was remarkably well maintained, even compared to Curitiba. The further from the city center we got, the more beautiful it became. Mountain roads with spectaculair views on the island’s lakes, mountains, valleys and the sea. This was a promising ride.

Arriving at our destination we saw the beach, fishermen, small shops and a little river. This was a beautiful place indeed! To get to our hostel we had to cross a bridge because it would be on a part of the island without cars. And that defined our stay there, waking up/going to sleep with the sound of the waves hitting the beach and the wind finding it’s way through the trees while being treated to a spectaculair view on the (almost private) beach, sea and mountains.

There are many activities on the island and we went out for surfing and did an easy hike from Lagoa da Conceição to Praia Mole (Meaning: Soft beach, and is actually surprisingly soft).

Our hostel provided free equipment to go out into the sea and have some fun surfing. Like this there was a 10 second gap between deciding to surf and getting the equipment, pure luxury! The waves at Lagoa da Conceição are not really big and therefore a safe way to get the hang of surfing. There are some rough parts and that’s were Imre found out she was not invincible to the forces of nature. Luckily without getting hurt.

The hiking path to Praia Mole provided a great perspective on this part of the island. I also saw a huge lizard and was really happy that it decided to run away. People always say „the animals are more afraid of you”, but I’m sure the animal just didn’t realize how scared I was.

As a Dutchman I never cease to be amazed by how easy it is to get into beautiful surroundings here in South-America. Just a 10min. walk in Florianópolis and you’re there. In a big city like Curitba it takes 10min. with the car, but still. I’m not talking about a little piece of land with some (planted) trees, I’m talking about some serious nature here.

We had a great time in Florianópolis; perfect to relax, horrible to leave.
